The canter is a natural gait of the horse which consists of three beats followed by a movement of suspension.

In canter, there is always a leading leg. The pattern of the left canter is the following: Right hind leg – left hind leg and right front leg simultaneously – left front leg (leading leg) – suspension. The pattern of the right canter is the exact opposite with the right front leg leading leg.
