Malakil Part 1: First time lunging & saddling the young horse

Trainer: Anja Beran

The three-year-old Arabian stallion Malakil is owned by the Marbach Main and State Stud and is only seeing Anja Beran's riding arena for the third time. When lunging for the first time, the trainer has to pay attention to numerous things so that the horse gets a good first working experience.

Understanding the commands given by the trainer and developing trust are parts of the early training of young horses. In this video, our classical dressage expert shows how Malakil works without stress.

In order to ensure security for horse and trainer, a few questions need to be answered in advance: What is the appropriate equipment? Are helpers needed? What are the first body & voice commands to teach? How can I do it? Where do I position myself? What to expect from a three-year-old horse? Anja Beran has the answers for you!

You will learn in this video:

  • What you can learn about your horse’s character while lunging him for the first time
  • How to introduce an inexperienced horse to the very first steps of his training without creating stress
  • How to prevent your horse from bucking while being saddled for the first time

Develop a soft and steady contact through correct riding

Ingrid Klimke

Once the basics of rhythm and suppleness have been established it is time to work on contact, as the next phase of the riding training. A steady contact should consist of a soft connection between the hands of the rider and the mouth of the horse. Pulling the head is never the solution. The movement should come from behind resulting in a horse that comes through the body to the bit and hands.
